Molde – the City of Roses and Panorama
The Molde area is known for the Trollstigen Mountain Road, the Atlantic Road, Molde Jazz Festival and the 222 mountain peaks of Molde Panorama.
During the 17th and 18th century, the city’s main industries were boat building, factory-made clothing trade and tourism. Today, Molde with it’s 25,000 inhabitants is the administrative center of the county of Møre and Romsdal as well as being an active educational, trading and tourism city.
The Rose Maiden, a bronze statue stands in Molde’s Town Hall Square. Rosepiken is young and beautiful, surrounded by dancing fountains and her arms outstretched and full of roses. The roof of the Town Hall boasts one of the city’s most beautiful rose gardens.
From the Varden viewpoint you can see Molde, the fjords, the islands and the
famous Molde Panorama – with some 222 partially snow-clad peaks.
Kongebjørke – or the King’s Birch marks the place where King Haakon and Crown Prince Olav sought shelter from German bombers in April 1949 when they where being hunted by the German occupying forces.
The Atlantic Road is an 8-kilometre long stretch of road between the towns of Molde and Kristiansund. The road zig-zags across low bridges that jut out over the sea, linking the islands. Hustadvika is an infamous stretch of ocean that is truly dramatic during stormy weather. In calmer weather you might spot whales and seals.The Atlantic Road has been awarded the status of National Tourist Route because of the architecture of the road and bridges, and the incredible coastline it passes through.
